Traffic fines on a hire car: who pays what

Fines follow the plate, so they reach us first. Here is how they get passed on, what the admin fee covers, and how long it takes to appear.

Traffic fines in the UAE attach to the number plate, not to the person driving. A radar or camera offence is issued against the registered owner of the vehicle, which on a hire car is us. We receive it, match it to whoever held the car at that date and time, and pass it on at cost with an administration fee.

Fines do not appear instantly. Depending on the emirate and the type of offence, one can take anything from a few days to several weeks to post against the plate. That lag is the reason a security deposit stays on hold after the car has been returned rather than being released at handover.

What the administration fee covers

The fee is for the processing, not the fine: retrieving the notice, matching it against the rental agreement, settling it, and sending you the evidence. The fine itself is passed on at exactly what the authority charged.

Serious offences are handled differently from a speeding ticket. Anything carrying black points or a vehicle impoundment involves the driver being formally identified to the authorities, and the process is far easier if you tell us as soon as it happens rather than letting the notice find us weeks later.

A fine that reaches us three weeks after you have flown home is still yours. That is what the deposit hold is for.
