The G 63 should not work as well as it does. It is a boxy, ladder-framed off-roader with three locking differentials, and AMG dropped a hand-built 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 into it — 585 hp, 850 Nm, and 0-100 km/h in 4.5 seconds.

Grey over beige is the quietest way to specify one, if quiet is a word that applies to a car with side-exit exhausts. The cabin is pure modern Mercedes: twin screens, massaging seats, and a dashboard grab handle that has been there since 1979.
